How to Close a Bank Account in the UAE Safely

Close a UAE bank account with a complete balance, card and liability record.

Banking & money · Reviewed 25 September 2026

If you need to close bank account UAE, start by identifying the exact record and authority involved. The live official service remains the final source for eligibility, documents, timing and any calculated charge.

Map everything linked to the account

List salary credits, standing orders, direct debits, cards, cheques, loans, subscriptions and pending refunds. Move essential payments only after the replacement account works.

Clear the balance and liabilities

Ask the bank for the exact closure requirements and settle outstanding card, overdraft or fee positions. Keep enough money for transactions already presented, then document the final transfer.

Submit a formal closure request

Use the bank’s authenticated channel and obtain a dated reference. Return or securely destroy cards and cheque books as instructed; simply withdrawing the balance is not closure.

Obtain written confirmation

Keep the final statement and closure letter, then monitor for unexpected messages. If the bank does not resolve a formal complaint, use the escalation route described by the UAE financial regulator or Sanadak.

Use only official channels. Never share an OTP, banking password or unrestricted UAE Pass approval with an agent.
